José Rodrigo Niño
It was during his training as medical student that José Rodrigo first became curious about psychotherapy and the healing capability of “talk therapy.” Later, while studying Yoga, Ayurveda and other alternative practices in India, he realized his skill and passion for working with people in a psychotherapeutic manner. In 1998, he moved to Chicago to earn his graduate degree in Counseling Psychology and pursue a career as a psychotherapist.
Currently, José Rodrigo works as a bilingual therapist in his Lincolnwood private practice and for Barrington Youth & Family Services. In 1999 he joined BYFS where he launched their Latino program. He works with a diverse population of adults, children, adolescents, couples, and families in both Spanish and English and also leads parenting and therapy groups. In addition, he has conducted workshops and consultations on cultural diversity issues like acculturation and the stress it generates.
Psychodynamic theory, Cognitive-Behavioral techniques, Systems theory, and the Tavistock model of group relations influence José Rodrigo’s work as a psychotherapist, as does his blend of eastern and western thinking. Initially trained as a physician in Colombia, South America, he also has extensive training in yoga philosophy and yoga psychology. This background has allowed him to have an understanding of the human condition that goes from the biological to the spiritual. To this end, he is able to offer training to his clients in yoga, meditation, and relaxation practices.
