Rebecca Hamilton Niño

Rebecca finished her training in Counseling Psychology in 1997 and became an LCPC three years later. She launched her private practice in October of 2000, and has been helping a variety of clients since that time on issues ranging from depression and anxiety to relationship issues and self-esteem. She has also worked as a clinician and administrator for several college counseling centers, including Barat College, DePaul University, and National-Louis University, where she currently serves as Director of Counseling Services.

Rebecca’s therapeutic focus is steeped in the values she finds important in her own life: balance, connection, and seeking information that leads to healthier, more purposeful choices. Her work is grounded in psychodynamic theory, described above. Accordingly, she believes that by acknowledging and processing unresolved issues from both the past and present, we free ourselves from being continually triggered or haunted by these memories, which in turn greatly increases our sense of inner peace. Rebecca also uses elements from Cognitive-Behavioral theory, Positive Psychology, and Solution-Focused Therapy in her work. These theories put an emphasis on changing dysfunctional, negative thought and behavior patterns that tend to keep us stuck. In addition, they can help navigate the sometimes tricky process of moving from insight to actual change.

Rebecca believes very strongly in the idea of living your life on purpose, rather than letting life live you. By creating a safe space for exploring concerns and self-defeating attitudes, clients are able to more fully and actively blossom into the people they truly want to be. Particular areas of interest include self-esteem, transition, relationship stress, finding purpose and balance, body image, and college/graduate student development.
